Ascot Royals - Ain't No Stopping Us Now...
First Canadian Place

It seems like yesterday we were upstairs at El Mocambo at NXNE watching The Ascot Royals playing to a very small audience and finishing their set with ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’. Fast forward a few years and a lot’s happened in the meantime….. Feted by Amy Winehouse’s father as a band to watch, the release of the excellent first album (2012) ‘Don’t Let It Stop You’, awarded a spot at the Molson Live at the Lake (2013) with a growing and devoted fan base, nothing could stop them. But then on September 22nd 2013, fate stepped in with the theft of their van and all of their equipment, none of which has ever been recovered. Had they called it a day at that point, they could have justifiably looked back with pride at how far they had come in such a short space of time. That of course, would have been the easy option…..

At First Canadian Place, the band once again demonstrated that they’ve only just started with a trademark energetic set showcasing new songs throughout their seven song set. Opening with 'Burning Me Out' and followed by their latest single ’The Best Is Yet To Come’, the bar was set for a growing audience, who joined in with the anthemic football chat during the next song ‘Skin and Bones’. The band, as always, were very tight musically and consistently showed they were enjoying themselves, which makes them very easy to watch. More new material followed with the infectious 'Sorry is all I've Got’ before finishing with ‘New Skin’, which opens with a fantastic bass line and then grows into a full on roar of a song, a true masterpiece.

When we face adversity we can take one of two paths, The Ascot Royals have taken their experiences to heart and shown that they are still developing positively as songwriters and impressing every time we see them. Having played the Way Home Festival in Barrie and Luminato in 2015, you should catch them whenever you can.
